WebM to Text: Transcribe Files with Opus Audio

Use this WebM to text converter to upload a browser recording with speech, review the transcript against playback, and download editable text or timed captions here. Audio-only WebM and WebM video are supported when they contain a playable Opus audio track; silent video and text visible on screen are not transcribed.

A direct file workflow

How to turn WebM into text

  1. 1

    Choose your WebM

Select an audio-only recording or a screen video with spoken Opus audio. Check that the file plays; a silent screen capture cannot become a transcript.

  2. 2

    Start transcription

Set the spoken language or use automatic detection, review the estimated credits, and submit. The saved task stays attached to this page and My records.

  3. 3

    Review and export

Replay unclear moments, edit and save the written draft, then download TXT or DOCX for reading, or SRT or VTT for timed captions.

Format details

WebM audio and video support

WebM can hold only audio, or video together with audio. The .webm suffix identifies the container, while the actual track determines whether speech can be transcribed. This page checks for an Opus audio track in the file itself; the WebM container guidelines also describe other possible codecs. You do not need to extract MP3 before uploading a compatible WebM.

For a screen demo, the speech track supplies the transcript and timing; pixels are not interpreted as words. A recording that ends with a long silent picture section still needs spoken audio to produce useful text. Keep the original video alongside an exported transcript when a reviewer must verify what was said and what was shown.

Common source

Transcribe browser recordings

A saved browser meeting, webcam clip, or narrated screen share often arrives as WebM. Download the finished file from the recorder before choosing it here. If the recorder made several fragments, export or join them into one playable file first. The on-page player makes it practical to pause at a name or decision and correct the corresponding sentence.

For example, a product review recording can become a short decision note: identify who will send the revised storyboard, preserve the stated deadline, and leave technical visual details in the source video. The practice clip below lets you hear the spoken brief before you decide how to format the handoff.

From recording to deliverable

What a WebM transcript helps you make

  • Browser recording beside an edited transcript with highlighted decisions and a playback timeline

A browser recording becomes a handoff

Keep the speaker's decisions in editable prose, then share the saved text with the team.

  • Product demo screen with caption lines and a written narration sheet

    A screen demo becomes captions

Check the spoken explanation at each playback time before exporting timed subtitles.

Know the boundary

What happens to videos without speech

A WebM file can be a silent screen capture. If it has no audio track, this tool rejects it before creating a transcription task. If the track exists but contains no spoken words, there is no transcript to keep; listen to the source and record narration when written speech is needed. The tool does not invent narration from the picture or convert text visible on screen.

Files above 250 MB or 60 minutes are outside this page's limit. A cut-off recording or an unsupported audio codec can also fail the file check. After a failed preparation, inspect the original file, choose a complete WebM with playable sound, and retry. The pricing and privacy pages explain credits and cloud handling in more detail.

Choose the right workflow

WhisperWeb vs Happy Scribe vs VEED

All three services can work with a WebM file. The practical difference is the job after upload: WhisperWeb keeps transcript review and downloadable text on this file-focused page; Happy Scribe adds an optional human proofreading route; VEED is useful when the edited video itself is the final product. Pick the workflow that matches your deliverable rather than an unverified accuracy percentage.

Quick answers

WebM to text questions

Can I transcribe a browser recording?

Yes, if the saved recording is a finalized .webm file with a playable Opus audio track. Browser screen recorders and media recorders often produce this container. Upload the file on this page, choose the spoken language or leave detection on automatic, and start the task. Review the words against playback before exporting, especially names, product terms, and numbers.

Does this read text on screen?

No. This tool converts spoken audio into written words; it does not read slide text, captions already burned into the picture, or interface labels. A screen recording can be transcribed when somebody speaks over it. If the recording shows only silent slides, there is no speech to recognize. Use the source video itself when you need to inspect visual details.

Must WebM contain an audio track?

Yes. WebM is a container, so its .webm extension alone does not prove that it contains speech or even sound. This page checks the file's actual container and audio track before creating a transcription task. It accepts Opus audio; a Vorbis track or video without audio needs a new WebM export with Opus sound. Audible music without spoken words also cannot produce a useful transcript.

Can I edit and download the transcript here?

Yes. After the task completes, play the source beside the recognized text, correct the draft, and save the revision. Download plain TXT or DOCX when the words are the deliverable; choose SRT or VTT when you need timed captions, or JSON for structured reuse. Saved tasks can also be reopened from My records, so a review can continue later.

What are the file and credit limits?

This WebM page accepts one file up to 250 MB and 60 minutes. The page shows an estimate before submission, and the server checks the stored file and duration before charging. Transcription uses the existing duration-based credits: half a credit up to 30 seconds, then one credit for each started minute. Your current balance and available plans appear in the tool and pricing page.
